Scope and Contents: This digital collection consists of documents selected from across the holdings of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library archives. Selections reflect the Roosevelt administration's involvement in the events surrounding the Holocaust and refugee crisis, and include extensive documentation drawn from FDR's Papers as President, from the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, the Myron Taylor Papers, the Sumner Welles Papers, the Records of the War Refugee Board, and more. This correspondence was originally selected by archivists of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in 2001 and subsequently microfilmed in 2006 by University Publications of America for their microform publication, Holocaust Era Research Collections: Holocaust Refugees and the FDR White House.
In 2001, responding to a resurgence of interest in issues related to the Holocaust, archivists at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library assembled copies of documents from across the Library's holdings that could be used for ready reference on this topic. As this project unfolded, the archivists applied a broad definition of the Holocaust and refugee issues. They selected documents showing the many facets of complicated issues - including the political, economic, and social conditions that both influenced and resulted from the Roosevelt administration's response to the Nazi persecution of European Jews. The resulting collection includes documentation not only of the government's response to the crisis, but also the views and opinions shared by the general public, and correspondence with refugees, themselves.
Because this collection contains selected materials only, researchers should be aware that additional materials on this topic can be found throughout the Library's collections, all of which are available to the public for more in-depth research. Contact the Archives for more information.
