Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, motion picture films, printed materials, and clippings related to Eleanor Roosevelt and Hadassah. The bulk of the material is arranged in five folders. Three folders, arranged chronologically, contain materials related to Roosevelt's four visits to Israel between 1952 and 1962 and to the visit in 1960 of her daughter Anna Roosevelt Halsted. Also included are a folder of assorted materials related to Eleanor Roosevelt and Hadassah, particularly messages of good wishes during her final illness in 1962; a folder containing primarily memorials to Eleanor Roosevelt after her death; and a copy of The Eleanor Roosevelt Youth Center in Beersheba (pub. after 1962) by Yehuda Hanegbi. The motion picture films include long and short versions of "Remembering Eleanor Roosevelt" (1962) and two films about Hadassah. (For more information on these films see "Separated Materials.")

Collection Historical Note

Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America was founded in 1912 by the American Jewish teacher and activist Henrietta Szold (1860-1945). The organization works to promote cultural connections between the United States and Isreal and healthcare worldwide.
