Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, court papers, maps, clippings, and other materials documenting the life and career of Tyler Kent. In particular thse materials pertain to his arrest, trial, and conviction of violating Britain's Official Secrets Act and the aftermath of that conviction. Also included are research files and other materials  pertaining to Ray Bearse's book Conspirator: The Untold Story of Tyler Kent.

Collection Historical Note

Tyler Gatewood Kent (1911-1988) was a clerk in the Code Room of the U.S. Embassy in London from 1939 to 1940. In 1940 he was accused of having stoled more than 1500 documents from embassy files, including correspondence between Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was then arrested by British authorities, tried, and convicted of having violated the Official Secrets Act of 1911. In 1945, after serving five years of  his seven-year sentence, he was released from prison and deported to the U.S.
