Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of memoranda and other materials relating to the Treasury Department; carbon copies of daily memoranda written by Coolidge as Under Secretary to Henry Morgenthau; a copy of Coolidge's publication, Why Centralized Government?; a draft copy of the "Report of Committee on Federal-State Relation" and related correspondence; assorted personal and professional correspondence; and materials pertaining to Coolidge's testimony on the Debt Reduction Act of 1957.

Collection Historical Note

T. Jefferson Coolidge was appointed Special Assistant to Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., in March 1934. On May 2 of that year he was appointed Under Secretary of the Treasury, a post he held until he resigned on February 1, 1936, to return to his Boston banking business. In 1941 Coolidge published Why Centralized Government?, and from 1947 to 1949 served as chairman of the Task Force on Federal-State Relations of the Commission of the Organization of the Executive Branch of the Government (First Hoover Commission).
