Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings related to Thomas Eliot's opposition to funding for the House Un-American Activities Committee (Dies Committee) in 1942. Also included is an index to the testimony of Walter S. Steele before the Committee on Un-American Activities.

Collection Historical Note

Thomas H. Eliot (1907-1991) was a Democratic Representative from the 9th Massachussetts Congressional District. He served in the Seventy-seventh Congress from 1941 to 1943. During his term he achieved noteriety for his opposition to funding for the House Un-American Activities Committee (Dies Committee). Though he failed to secure nomination for subsequent Congressional elections, he served in a variety of war-time government posts, including director of the British Division, Office of War Information and chairman of the appeals committee, National War Labor Board.
