Arrangement: The arrangement of this collection reflects that given by the FDR Library in 1968 when these materials were copied from microfilm. The letters from Felix Frankfurter to FDR are bound in 16 folders distributed through three boxes. The folders contain letters numbered consecutively from 1 to 615. The letters from FDR to Frankfurter in Box 4 are arranged chronologicaly according to the phase of FDR's public career during which he wrote the letters. The additional correspondence and other materials in Box 4 are arranged in folders according to the person to whom they pertain. The folders in Box 5 contain miscellaneous correspondence and other materials relating primarily to Felix Frankfurter and FDR.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists primarily of correspondence between Felix Frankfurter and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also included are correspondence between Frankfurter and others, correspondence between FDR and others, memoranda, press releases, and clippings pertaining to Frankfurter, FDR, and others. The materials are housed in five boxes (for more information see "Arrangement"):

Six folders of letters from Felix Frankfurter to FDR, containing letters 1-214. Also includes clippings.

Box 2

Six folders of letters from Felix Frankfurter to FDR, containing letters 215-452. Also includes clippings.

Box 3

Four folders of letters from Felix Frankfurter to FDR, containing letters 453-615. Also includes clippings.

Box 4

Letters from FDR to Frankfurter; correspondence and other materials pertaining to the Roosevelt National Memorial Committee; correspondence between Frankfurter and Eleanor Roosevelt and other materials pertaining to the latter; correspondence and other materials relating to General Edwin M. Watson; correspondence and other materials pertaining to Thomas G. Corcoran.

Box 5

Miscellaneous correspondence, press releases, memoranda, and clippings relating to primarily to Felix Frankfurter and FDR.

Collection Historical Note

Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) was an Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court and a close friend and advisor of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Appointed by FDR to the court in 1939, Frankfurter served until his retirement in 1962.
