John H. Fahey Papers | Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum
Primary Creator: John H. Fahey
Extent: 7.7 Cubic Feet
Arrangement: The Papers of John H. Fahey is a one series collection arranged alphabetically.
Date Acquired: 00/00/1973
The Fahey Papers contain both business and personal correspondence arranged alphabetically either by subject or by surname of correspondent and thereunder chronologically. Only a small portion of the material relates to Fahey’s early career or his activities outside the government.
Fahey had a lengthy career in federal service and the collection primarily covers Fahey's tenure as the chairman of Federal Home Loan Bank Board. This was instrumental to housing programs established in the latter years of the New Deal. These papers carry over into the Truman administration where Fahey would finish his career.
Much of the material concerning government agencies was unarranged when it was received by the Library. For that reason, separate files have been created for the Home Owners Loan Corporation, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Administration, and for cases involving the Long Beach Federal Savings and Loan Association and the Los Angeles Home Loan Bank. The researchers should be aware, however, that these agencies are so inter-related that material concerning one may be found in the files of the others. In addition, particularly in the Long beach and Los Angeles cases, there are files for individuals involved. In such cases, the name of the institution has been noted in the finding aid next to the name of the individual. The two accessions were combined to form a single collection. For this reason, the researcher will find, in some instances, two sets of files on the same topic and for the same time period.
John H. Fahey was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on February 19, 1873. After graduation from high school, he began a career in the newspapers business which continued until 1925. Fahey held positions with the Eastern Associated Press in New Haven, the Associated Press in Boston, the Boston Traveler, the Worchester (Massachusetts) Post, the Manchester (New Hampshire) Mirror, the Clarke Press and New York Evening Post. He was also president of St. John’s River Shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida, from 1918-1920.
Mr. Fahey’s public service began in 1923 when he was selected to be a member of the United States section of the Inter-American High Commission. During the Roosevelt Administrations, he was appointed chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Home Owners Loan Corporation, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation and a commissioner of the Federal Home Loan Bank Administration, a post which he held until his death on November 19, 1950.
In civic matters Mr. Fahey was prominent in the Chamber of Commerce serving as chairman of the committee to organize the International Chamber of Commerce. He was also chairman of the Executive Committee of the Twentieth Century Fund and a member of the Board of Directors of the Edward A. Filene Good Will Fund.
