Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of manuscripts and galley proofs of vols. 1-4 of Frank Freidel's six-volume biography of Franklin Roosevelt. The collection also includes correspondence and other materials related to the National Study Commission on Records and Documents of Federal Officials.

Collection Historical Note

Frank Freidel (1916-1993) was an historian and author of several books on Franklin Roosevelt and other topics, including a six-volume biography of FDR that culminates with Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Rendezvous With Destiny (1990). Freidel was long a professor of history at Harvard University and also served on the National Study Commission on Records and Documents of Federal Officials. Established in 1974 and popularly known as the Public Documents Commission, the Commission formulated recommendations for the control, disposition, and preservation of records created by, or on behalf of, federal officials.

Accruals: After the initial accession in 1957 (manuscripts and galley proofs of vols. 1-3 of biography of FDR), additional materials (mansuscripts and galley proofs of vol. 4, materials related to the National Study Commission on Records and Documents of Federal Officials) were accessioned in February 1974, April 1979, and June 1979.
