Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of diaries summarizing daily activities, incoming and outgoing correspondence, and copies of reports prepared for Secretary Morgenthau. Also included are memoranda from Gaston to Morgenthau and one volume of material relating to the Attorney General's Interdepartmental Committee on Employee Investigations (established by Executive Order 9300 in February 1943).
Collection Historical Note
Herbert Gaston (1881-1956) was appointed Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury on November 20, 1933. He held this position until he was nominated to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in June 1939. As Assistant Secretary he was responsible for the Secret Service, the Narcotics Bureau, the Bureau of Customs, and the Coast Guard. He served in this position until 1945.
