Collection Historical Note

Dr. A. David Gurewitsch was a close friend and personal physician to Eleanor Roosevelt from the late 1940s until her death in 1962.  ER met Gurewitsch through their mutual friend, Trude Lash.  ER asked him to be her personal physician in 1945.  By 1947, the relationship between ER and Gurewitsch had evolved from one of doctor and patient to a close friendship.  During the following fifteen years, they corresponded regularly, and travelled together to Israel, Pakistan, India, Greece, Yugoslavia, France, and Switzerland.  Gurewitsch took hundreds of photographs of the former First Lady during these trips.

When Gurewitsch married Edna Perkel in 1958, the ceremony was held in ER’s New York City apartment.  Soon after, ER and the Gurewitsches bought a town house together in New York, though they maintained separate living spaces.  ER and the Gurewitsches often dined, went to concerts or the theater, and travelled together. After ER’s death in 1962, Gurewitsch published the book Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Day, which included a number of the photographs he took during their travels abroad.
