Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of one box of official correspondence between Harper & Brothers and authors whose works, for the most part, relate to the Roosevelt era; those connected with the publication of those works; and other authors published by the firm. The collection contains correspondence with Eleanor Roosevelt mainly concerning her autobiography; correpondence with Samuel I. Rosenman concerning his book Working with Roosevelt and his edition of The Public Papers and Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt; correspondence mainly between Harper & Brothers editor Eugene Saxton and authors such as Sinclair Lewis, Rebecca West, and Claude McKay; and of correspondence with Robert Sherwood and other documentary materials concerning his book Roosevelt and Hopkins.

Collection Historical Note

Founded in 1833, Harper & Brothers gew to become one of the most prominent American publishing firms. As well as books, the company published the magazines Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Harper's Weekly, Harpar's Bazar, and Harper's Young People. In 1962 the company merged with Row, Peterson & Company to become Harper & Row.
