Abstract
This collection includes papers relating to Captain Thomas A. Thornton's work with the Joint Intelligence Collection Agency - Middle East (JICA-ME), 1943-1947.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The materials in the collection date between 1943 and 1947. The collection includes declassified documentation both involving Captain Thornton and the JICA-ME. This includes directives, official reports and recommendations and awards for Captain Thornton or for his subordinates. There is also a small amount of personal correspondence. There is a 200 page handwritten “Daily Log of JICA-ME Navy, Cairo Egypt”. Items of a personal nature include two day books written by Captain Thornton recording his daily actions and an Arabic text, possibly a day book.
Collection Historical Note
Captain Thomas A. Thornton of the U.S. Navy headed the Joint Intelligence Collection Agency - Middle East (JICA-ME) headquartered in Cairo from 1943 to 1947. He was highly decorated by his own country and by the King of Yugoslavia and the King of Greece.
