Scope and Contents of the Materials
The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, photographs, and other materials relating primarily to the writing and publication of This is America. The correspondence is mainly between Frances Cooke Macgregor and Eleanor Roosevelt but also includes correspondence with the publisher, G. P. Putnam's Sons, and the U.S. Copyright Office. The materials are housed in one box containing four folders.
Collection Historical Note
Francis Cooke Macgregor was a social scientist who studied the psychological effects of facial disfigurment. Her work constituted the fist acknowledgement of disfigurement as a disability. She was also a noted photographer whose pictures of Hingham, Massachussetts, were published in the book This Is America (1941), the text of which was written by her friend Eleanor Roosevelt.
