Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, cartoons, printed matter, and other materials related to Jay "Ding" Darling and to Tom Mahoney's writings on him.
Collection Historical Note
Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling (1876-1962) was a political cartoonist and conservation advocate. He became a friend and political ally of Theodore Roosevelt, with whom he wrote two books. In 1934 Franklin D. Roosevelt recruited him, along with noted conservationists Aldo Leopold and Thomas Beck, to serve on the President's Committee for Wild Life Restoration. From 1935 to 1936 he directed the Bureau of Biological Survey. During this period he helped to develop the Duck Stamp Act of 1934 and designed the first stamp. After his government service he helped to organize the National Wildlife Federation and continued to draw and publish cartoons. Tom Mahoney was a journalist and friend of Jay Darling.
