Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection is comprised of correspondence with Hikone Isuke Sano between 1954 and 1961. Eleanor and Sano discuss the use and development of atomic bombs, Sano's health and polio illness, and similar experiences they each had while campaigning among other topics. A large portion of the collection includes letters written in Japanese and clippings from Japanese newspapers.
Collection Historical Note
Mr. Sano was a member of a committee that welcomed Eleanor Roosevelt to Japan when she arrived to learn about the effect of the atomic bombs in Japan, and he met her upon a second trip to Japan. The two maintained a friendship and corresponded frequently.
