Scope and Contents of the Materials

The papers of John Franklin Carter are comprised of an oral history interview conducted by Charles T. Morrissey, Chief of the John F. Kennedy Library Oral History Project. The topic of the interview is the "S" project during the Second World War involving Ernest "Putzi" Hansfstaengl.  Hansfstaengl was a close friend of Adolf Hitler in the 1920's and 1930's.  After a falling out, Hansfstaengl defected to the U.S. and worked with the Roosevelt administration. Carter was in charge of the "S" project that held Hansfstaengl in the custody of the government.
