Abstract

This collection holds an assortment of historical materials, mostly letters and textual documents, donated by members of the public to be preserved and made accessible for research at the FDR Presidential Library. The collection documents many subjects associated with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt themselves, or with the many people, organizations, and issues that most directly characterized or influenced public memory of the Roosevelt Administration.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection, assembled by archivists of the FDR Presidential Library beginning in 1939, contains an assortment of textual manuscript materials donated by the public to the Presidential Library. It includes a variety of historical documentation of subjects associated with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, or with persons, organizations, and topics that characterize public experiences of the Roosevelt Administration and its legacy. Materials range in scope from one item to multiple folders, and may include correspondence, memorial programs, diaries, written reminiscences or short memoirs, original poetry and songs, invitations, menus, pamphlet literature, broadsides, speeches, and certificates. The collection does not include non-textual materials such as still photographs, sound or film recordings. Subjects include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, the FDR Presidential Library, the White House, the Roosevelt family, New York State history, women’s history, African American history, Democratic Party electoral campaigns, the Great Depression, the New Deal, and World War II.

Collection Historical Note

This collection’s previous title was “Franklin D. Roosevelt Library: Collection of miscellaneous manuscripts too small to be named as collections.” It has been maintained and added to actively by archivists of the FDR Presidential Library since the Library’s creation in 1939.

Researchers should refer to related materials in the FDR Library Subject Reference Files (formerly titled “Vertical File”); and to the Library’s Printed Materials and Ephemera Collections, which include books, scrapbooks, certificates, newspapers, and other periodicals that may also have been donated by the public.
