Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and printed material documenting the career of Paul Appleby. These include materials pertaining to the 1940 vice-presidential candidacy of Henry A. Wallace; Paul Appleby's State Department service in French North Africa; wartime food shipments to Great Britain; the Interim Commission on Food and Agriculture and the formation of the Food and Agriculture Organization; and the work of the United Nations Contributions Commission. Also included are miscellaneous memoranda.
Collection Historical Note
Paul Appleby entered government service in 1933 as Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture. In 1940 he became Under Secretary of Agriculture, and from 1944 to 1947 he served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of the Budget. During the period he also served as Chief of Food Missions to Britain (1941-1942); Special Assistant to the Lend Lease Administrator (1942-1943); Chairman of the International Wheat Council (1942-1944); U.S. delegate to the Hot Springs Food Conference (1943); U.S. member of the Interim Commission on Food and Agriculture (1943-1944); and member of the Contributions Committee of the United Nations (1946). In 1947 Paul Appleby became Dean of the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. The bulk of his papers have been given to Syracuse University.
