Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of personal and professional correspondence; clippings, printed material, and memorabilia concerning Katherine Blackburn, particularly from the World War II period; materials concerning her employment with the <span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">Women's Division, Democratic National Committee from 1933 to 1941; as Director, Office of Government Reports from 1941 to 1942; and as Chief, Bureau of Special Services of the Office of War Information.</span>

Collection Historical Note

From 1926 to 1932 Katherine Blackburn was associated with the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. She entered government service in 1933 as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State. She was detailed to the National Emergency Council as Director of the Division of Press Intelligence in 1933 and in 1936 was named Special Assistant for Press Dissemination in the State Department. In 1939 she became Assistant Director of the Office of Government Reports/ from 1943 to 1945 she was Chief of Special Services for the Domestic Branch of the Office of War Information. In 1946 she became Chief of the Government Information Service in the Bureau of the Budget. She returned to the Office of Government Reports as Acting Chief in 1947.
