Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of drafts of message from Franklin Roosevelt to members of his cabinet while on cruise in 1935; a typescript and galley proofs of Wilson Brown's article, "Aide to Four Presidents"; photographs and clippings related to that article; a typescript of the book Four Presidents, a typescript of Brown's proposed book, From Sail to Carrier Task Force; and notes by Professor-Emeritus Royal S. Pease concerning this book.
Collection Historical Note
A career naval officer, Wilson Brown served as Naval Aide to Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, and Truman. He was appointed Naval Aide to Franklin Roosevelt in June 1934 and served until May 1936. Between 1936 and 1943 he received various assignments, including Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy from 1938 to 1941. He again served as Naval Aide to Franklin Roosevelt from February 1943 until the latter's death in 1945. During these years Wilson Brown directed the Map Room in the White House.
