Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of correspondence, notes, drafts, electrocardiograms, and clippings related to the health of Franklin Roosevelt. Included are Howard Bruenn's paper, "Clinical Notes on the Illness and Death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt," and his notes on Franklin Roosevelt’s physical condition from March 27, 1944, to April 12, 1945.
Collection Historical Note
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Howard Bruenn graduated from Columbia University in 1925 and from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1929. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned a Lieutenant Commander. He was later assigned to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland where he was chief of cardiology. Shortly thereafter he was assigned as Franklin Roosevelt's attending physician. He was present at Warm Springs, Georgia, when the President died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945. After the President's death, Howard Bruenn maintained a private practice until he retired in 1975. He died on July 29, 1996.
