Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence, mainly from Earl Miller; a copy of Miriam Abelow's diary pages relating her visit with Eleanor Roosevelt at Val-Kill in 1943, clippings, and photographs.

Collection Historical Note

During World War II Miriam Abelow was an active member of the American Women's Volunteer Services Motor Transport Corps in Brooklyn, New York. In this capacity, she became acquainted with Lieutenant Commander Earl Miller, USN, a personal friend of the Roosevelt family. In 1943 Miller introduced Miriam and Robert Abelow to Eleanor Roosevelt. Earl Miller remained a friend and correspondent of the Abelows for over 25 years.
