2:00pm

Set all ship's clocks back one half hour to conform to Zone Plus Four time. During the afternoon a storm set in -- the first really bad weather encountered during the entire expedition to date. This storm continued until late in the night. Temperature meanwhile dropped steadily. The USS Iowa continued to ride steady -- even during the worst of the storm -- but the escorting destroyers were having rough going.

USS Iowa

11:13pm

The night was very dark and stormy, visibility zero. Task group was forced to turn on running lights and to maneuver to avoid colliding with a single merchant vessel standing north on a course that was crossing the USS Iowa's. Had it not been for the radar contact, a collision would have certainly occurred.
