FDR and his party left his villa for the airport. On leaving the villa, honors were paid to FDR by the Second Battalion of the Coldstream Guards. (Lt. Col. Norman commanding).

FDR's plane departed El Aouina Airport for Malta. Plane was escorted to Malta by a group of 12 P38's (fighter planes), and relays of fighter planes escorted FDR throughout the day. On the plane were: FDR, Harry L. Hopkins, Adm. William D. Leahy, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lt. Gen. Spaatz, Adm's. Wilson Brown and Ross T. McIntire, Gen. Edwin M. Watson, Maj. Gen. Bedell Smith, Maj. John Boettiger, Lt. Comdr. Fox, Lt. (jg) Rigdon, Sgt. Robert Hopkins, and Secret Service agents Reilly, Spaman, Beary, Behn and Fredericks.

En route to Malta

FDR's plane landed at Luqua Airfield, Malta. FDR was greeted here by Lord Gort, Governor and Commander-in-Chief, Malta, who came aboard the plane immediately on FDR's arrival. (Note: the landing here was made without the use of the landing flaps because of a mechanical failure. However, due to the skill of the pilot, Maj. Bryan, there was no noticeable difference in the manner of the landing here and at other airfields.)

FDR left his plane, entered a jeep, and proceeded to a nearby area where a guard of honor rendered honors and the Stars and Stripes was hoisted nearby. This was the first time the US national ensign had ever been officially raised on Malta. Lord Gort presented various officers and local officials to FDR. FDR then addressed the crowd. On completion of FDR's remarks, Maj. John Boettiger presented the Malta Scroll to Lord Gort. Lord Gort accepted the scroll and made a short speech.

After the presentation ceremony was over, FDR returned to his plane and was informed by Maj. Bryan that the necessary repairs had not yet been completed on his plane and that it would require approximately one hour's additional time to complete them (the hydraulic mechanism for operating the wing flaps was out of commission).

At the invitation of Lord Gort, FDR left the airport by auto for a drive through the Malta Dockyard area. This is reputed to have been the most bombed spot in the world during the present war. The area was still generally in shambles, but local officers informed FDR that the Dockyard was now, through the use of underground workshops, operating at near-normal efficiency.

FDR returned to the airport and embarked on his plane. The repairs to his plane were not yet completed and FDR lunched in the plane while the repairs were being rushed to completion.

The repairs to FDR's plane were completed, and remaining members of the party embarked. FDR's plane departed Malta for Castelvetrano, Sicily. Passengers in FDR's plane were the same as in the flight from Tunis, Tunisia to Malta. Log notes a few interesting facts that were brought to their attention. On the flight from Malta to Sicily, Italy, points in Italy were visible from the air and were pointed out to passengers by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as they came into view.

FDR's plane landed at an Allied operational airfield at Castelvetrano, Sicily, Italy. FDR was greeted by Lt. Gen's. George S. Patton and Mark W. Clark, USA, Gen. Henry H. Arnold was observed to be there as well. FDR departed on a tour, via jeep, of the airfield. Several companies were drawn up for inspection by FDR. This was followed by various other bestowings of honors given to and by FDR, and by further inspections. FDR was then photographed with the officers that he had decorated that day.

FDR and his party returned to his plane, which then departed Castelvetrano, Sicily, Italy for Tunis, Tunisia. Maj. John Boettiger left the party here to return to his duty in Italy. Gen's. Spaatz and Smith left the party here also. Maj. Durno and Secret Service Agent Rowle, who had come to Sicily via another aircraft this morning, joined the party for the return flight to Tunis. Dwight D. Eisenhower remained and spent the entire day with FDR.

FDR's plane landed at El Aouina Airport, Tunis, Tunisia. FDR disembarked and motored to the "White House" where he spent the night. He was greeted at the airport by Elliott Roosevelt, who also accompanied him to his villa.

FDR dined at his villa with Adm. William D. Leahy, Adm's. Wilson Brown and Ross T. McIntire, Gen. Edwin M. Watson, and Elliott Roosevelt. He retired soon after dinner, as he was scheduled for an early morning takeoff the following day.
