The USS Murphy overtook the USS Quincy and came alongside, delivering mail for FDR. (Commander Destroyer Squadron 17's letter report on the USS Murphy's "Mission to Mecca"). After leaving from alongside, the USS Murphy rejoined the task group and took station as a screening vessel.

Task group in Straits of Gibraltar. Air coverage was furnished throughout day by 2 Venturas, a group of "P-38's" and a blimp operating from US bases in North Africa. Air search was most intenshive, particularly during the transit of the narrow waters of the Straits. Enemy submarines were believed to be operating in this vicinity since 2 ships were reported sunk the previous day. Minesweeper had sound contact, but no "kill" was obtained.)
