The USS Frankford came alongside the USS Quincy and delivered US mail for the USS Quincy. None of this mail was for FDR's party.

The Rock of Gibraltar was sighted, bearing 280 and distant 35 miles.

The USS Murphy overtook the USS Quincy and came alongside, delivering mail for FDR. (Commander Destroyer Squadron 17's letter report on the USS Murphy's "Mission to Mecca"). After leaving from alongside, the USS Murphy rejoined the task group and took station as a screening vessel.

Course and position noted. 411 miles traveled from Algiers, Tunisia.

The task group increased speed to 27 knots.

The USS Quincy passed the Rock of Gibraltar abeam to starboard, 7 miles distant.

Task group in Straits of Gibraltar. Air coverage was furnished throughout day by 2 Venturas, a group of "P-38's" and a blimp operating from US bases in North Africa. Air search was most intenshive, particularly during the transit of the narrow waters of the Straits. Enemy submarines were believed to be operating in this vicinity since 2 ships were reported sunk the previous day. Minesweeper had sound contact, but no "kill" was obtained.)

Task group increased speed to 29 knots.

Passed Cape Spartel Light abeam to port, distant 5 miles.

Task group completed safe passage of the Straits of Gibraltar.

Task group set course 240. The westbound routing across the Atlantic was the reverse of that prescribed for the eastbound voyage.

Task group slowed 27 knots.

Task group reduced speed to 24 knots. The USS Champlin, Nields, Parker and Laub were detached from task group and directed to return to Oran, Tunisia.

FDR received Mr. Smith, Mr. Cornell, and Mr. Nixon in his cabin and held a brief press conference. The conference was recorded by Lt. Rigdon.
