Marlene Park and Gerald E. Markowitz Papers (Federal Arts Projects Research Materials) | Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum
Collection Overview
Title: Marlene Park and Gerald E. Markowitz Papers (Federal Arts Projects Research Materials)
Primary Creator: Park, Marlene and Markowitz, Gerald E.
Extent: 15.96 Cubic Feet
Arrangement: This is a collection in one series.
Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Papers of Marlene Park and Gerald E. Markowitz contains their research files for New Deal for Art and Democratic Vistas and their research on murals created in local post offices around the country, which was then compiled in a 1984 book titled Democratic Vistas: Post Offices and Public Art in the New Deal.
Included in the collection are documents provided to donors by New Deal artists, exhibition catalogs and reports of the PWA and WPA/FAP. Much of this relates to New Deal for Art The Government Projects of the 1930's with Examples from New York City and State, an exhibition mounted in 1977.
There are also copies of files from the National Archives and New York City Art Commission Archives, files on specific projects arranged by state and town and photocopies of other scholarly work about New Deal arts projects. Supplementary materials include card files of artists' names and works, black and white photo files (mostly from NARA but also photos from artists' collections).
Collection Historical Note
According to the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, which maintains significant collections on art history, Marlene Park (1931- ) and Gerald E. Markowitz (1944- ) teamed up to conduct exhaustive research on New Deal art projects in the 1970's and 1980's. Their work resulted in an exhibition "New Deal for Art: The Government Projects of the 1930's with Examples from New York City and State" (1977) and a catalog with the same title. They also produced a book, Democratic Vistas: Post Offices and Public Art in the New Deal (1984).
This research was later donated to the FDR Library. Other work by Park and Markowitz may be found in the Smithsonian Institution. Both were on the faculty of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Marlene Park served on the Public Art Preservation Committee from 1979-1982.
