Collection Historical Note

The Wiltwyck Boys School first opened in 1936 to African American juvenile delinquents as a summer camp.  After success, the camp was opened year round to neglected boys from New York City and run by the Episcopal City Mission Society. Located across the river from the Roosevelt's home, Eleanor Roosevelt learned about the mission of the school and chose to support it.  She gave financially to the school and sat on the Board of Directors, working to gain financial support for the school.
