Collection Historical Note

A decorated veteran of World War I, Hugh S. Johson worked on Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 presidential campaign. He later helped to draft the National Recovery Act and then served as Administrator of the National Recovery Administration until he resigned, amid controversy, in 1934. From that year until his death in 1942 he worked as a public speaker, writer, and syndicated newspaper columnist.
