Description:
Original caption reads: "The Tricolor flies again over the Kasbah Mehdia, acient Portuguese fortress near Fort Lyautey, French Morocco, although the fortress capitulated after three days fighting with American forces last November. The portion of the fortress shown above bears the marks of American bombardment. Near this spot, visited by President Roosevelt's party in North Africa recently, is an American cemetery where white crosses mark the graves of American soldier dead. The Stars and Stripes hang from the flagpole there, and against the pole the American soldiers laid a large wreath. The photograph, showing a French sentry and American soldiers at ease, was taken on that day." Archivist note: Based on the should sleeve insignia on one of the American soldiers, they appear to be from the 9th Infantry Division.
