Description:
Original caption reads: "French Refugees return to liberated Cherbourg.  Most of the citizens of Cherbourg, aided by the Civil Affairs Division of the Allied Expeditionary Force, have returned to their homes in the liberated city.  When the Germans ordered civilians to evacuate in mid-June, 1944, hundreds of families fled, many of them at the poin of Nazi bayonets, to take refuge in the villages and towns in the surrounding countryside.  The more fortunate managed to evade the Germans and made their way to the American lines, where they were taken care of until it was possible to arrange for their transport back to their homes in U.S. Army trucks.  A French mother is shown with two of her children as they arrived in Cherbourg in a U.S. Army truck from St. Lo, where they took refuge."
