Description:
Original caption reads: "Members of the Maquis massacred by the Nazis.  French Red Cross workers search for identification papers of the Maquis who lie massacred at their feet.  The men had been prisoners of the Nazis in the Chateau St. Vincennes, one of the famous old forts of Paris, where the Nazis resisted before the liberation of the French Capital August 25, 1944.  Panicked by their inevitable defeat, the Nazis dug pits and brought the Frenchmen out in batches of 15 and shot them with machine guns beside a communal grave.  A patriotic French priest led the Red Cross workers and members of the Maquis to the graves.  The bodies were disinterred for identification and for a decent burial in free French soil."
