Description:
Original caption reads: "During the fight for a town in Germany, units of Company A, 7th Armored Division, encountered 1,200 American soldiers, who had escaped from a prisoner of war camp at Limburg, Germany. This is part of that group." Archvist note: The caption is incorrect. There was no "Company A, 7th Armored Division." Companies with letter designators were assigned to battalions within divisions. While there were companies assigned directly to divisions (i.e. the 147th Armored Signal Company of the 7th Armored Division), they had numerical designators instead of letters. The caption could mean Combat Command A of the 7th Armored Division, or Company A of one of the following battalions: 17th Tank Battalion, 31st Tank Battalion, 40th Tank Battalion, 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion, 38th Armored Infantry Battalion, 48th Armored Infantry Battalion, 33rd Armored Engineer Battalion, 77th Armored Medical Battalion, or 129th Armored Ordnance Battalion. These battalions were all assigned to 7th Armored Division. The 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 434th and 440th Armored Field Artillery Battalions, and 489th Armored Artillery Battalion were also assigned to the 7th Armored Division, however their company sized units were referred to as Troops (for cavalry) or Batteries (for artillery).
