Description:
Original caption reads: "Gunners from the British Navy are being instructed by American Naval gunners in the operation of a secret device that is part of the guns aboard the over-age U.S. destroyer turned over too Britain in exchange for Naval & Air bases. The photo was made at a Canadian port as the U.S. censor has obliterated that part of the photo which shows the secret mechanism. Three of the former U.S. destroyers may be seen in the background." Archivist note: The three destroyers in the background are, from left to right, DD-131 USS Buchanan, which would serve in the Royal Navy as I42 HMS Campbelltown; DD-134 USS Crowninshield, which would serve in the Royal Navy as I35 HMS Chelsea; and DD-193 USS Abel P. Upshur, which would serve in the Royal Navy as HMS Claire. The Claire was a Clemson-class destroyer. The Campbelltown and Chelsea were both Wickes-class destroyers.
