This collection is divided in to three series:

A correspondence file relating to subjects on legislative business, election campaigns, speaking invitations and other political subjects. This series consists of three subseries: General Subject Files, Legislative Files, and Name Files. Thereafter, the material is arranged alphabetically.

A pamplet file containing assorted pamphlets regarding politics and related to FDR’s election and participation in the New York State Senate. This series consists of two subseries: Pamphlets – General, and Pamphlets – Legislative. Within the subseries, the pamplets are arranged alphabetically by subject.

A Clippings and Scrapbook File: Contains a large amount of mounted and un-mounted clippings pertaining to FDR’s involvement in the New York State Senate, and two scrapbooks.

Abstract

The papers in this collection relate to the political career of Franklin D. Roosevelt between October 1910 and March 1913.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection of correspondence and related papers was accumulated by Franklin D. Roosevelt between October 1910, when he was nominated as Democratic candidate for New York State Senator, and March 1913, when he resigned to become Assistant Secretary of the Navy. The records consist of correspondence, a diary, original drafts and copies of speeches, invitations, legislative proposals (bills and resolutions), newspapers and newspaper clippings, pamphlets, campaign material, and other related papers. The majority of the papers pertain to his public life, but there is some family correspondence and material relating to other personal affairs.

Collection Historical Note

Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated as Democratic candidate for the New York State Senate, 26^th District (Putnam, Dutchess, and Columbia Counties). He resigned during his second term in March 1913 to become Assistant Secretary of the Navy in President Woodrow Wilson’s administration. During his career in the State Senate, FDR was chairman of the Forest, Fish, and Game Committee, 1911-1912; a member of the Agriculture, Canals, Codes, Conservation, Military Affairs, and Railroads Committee; a member of a special committee investigating the New York City Police Department, 1912-1913; and sponsor of about 75 bills and resolutions, mostly on conservation matters and election reforms. In 1911, FDR was one of the leaders of the Democratic “insurgents” who fought the Tammany Hall Democrats in the Legislature over the nomination and election of a United States Senator of New York; and in 1912 he was prominent in the Empire State Democracy organization and in the New York State Wilson Conference in connection with pre-convention activities on behalf of Woodrow Wilson as Democratic candidate for President.
