Collection Historical Note
Wilbur J. Cohen was a member of the Committee on Economic Security (1934-1935), which drafted the Social Security Act. Between 1935 and 1956 Mr. Cohen held several positions with the Social Security Administration, concluding his service as Director of the Division of Research and Statistics (1953-1956). From 1961 to 1969 he served as Assistant Secretary (1961-1965), Under Secretary (1965-1968), and Secretary (1968-1969) of the Department of Heath, Education, and Welfare. He was Chairman of the National Commission on Unemployment Compensation from 1978 to 1980.
