Original caption reads: "President receives novel check. Washington, D.C., Miss Myrtle Berheim, White House Secretary, holds a check for $70,000 written on the wood and metal wing flap of a Japanese airplane, which was shot down over Pearl Harbor. Sent to President Roosevelt, the contribution came from workers at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard and represents their wages for Labor Day. The President turned the check over to the Treasury Department."
