Description:
Original caption reads: "Original sketch of U.S. Navy 'Superonic [sic] Test Tube'  Literally a 'superonic [sic] test tube,' the U.S. Navy's revolutionary stub-winged, projectile-like D-558 Skystreak was designed to fly at speeds never before attained by man-carrying aircraft.  The plane was created by engineers of Douglas Aircraft's El Segundo plant in California to crack through the sonic barrier.  Though strictly a test plane, the D-558 will perform as a normal airplane.  It will take-off, climb, make level speed runs and land at all times under its own power.  The scientific world awaits the data the Skystreak will obtain flying into the unknown phenomena at the speed of sound."
