Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of brochures, pamphlets, form letters, newspapers, and clippings related to Upon Sinclair's EPIC Plan (End Poverty In California). Three folders of materials and one oversize box containing 27 issues of Sinclair's EPIC News (April 1934-February 25, 1935) and other newspapers.
Collection Historical Note
Upton Sinclair was an American novelist best known for The Jungle (1906), an exposé of unsafe and unsanitary working conditions in Chicago's meat-packing plants. After moving to California, Sinclair twice ran for governor of California on the Socialist ticket. In 1934, encouraged by the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sinclair ran as a Democrat. Central to his campain was his End Poverty in California (EPIC) Plan, a progressive economic program that attracted significant popular support in the state.
