Passed through the submarine net-gate and entered Grand Harbor, Valetta, Malta. FDR was on deck as the USS Quincy entered port. From the very large crowd evident, it appeared that all Malta was out to greet him. Both sides of the Channel were lined with the people of Malta. Note: The Malta Conference took place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, 1945. The United States and the United Kingdom were the participants. FDR attended only on the last day, Feb. 2. |

The USS Quincy moored, starboard side to, at berth 9 in Grand Harbor, Valetta, Malta. The USS Memphis (light cruiser and flagship of Vice Adm. H. K. Hewitt, USN, Commander Eighth Fleet) was present in Malta. Prime Min. Winston S. Churchill and his party were at Grand Harbor and witnessed FDR's arrival from the deck of the HMS Sirius (light cruiser), moored across the channel from where the USS Quincy tied up. FDR received all visitors on the deck of the USS Quincy during the morning. Log notes various messages from Winston S. Churchill to FDR concerning bad health conditions at Yalta, USSR. They visited the countryside and the towns of Medina, Chajn, Tuffieha and Valetta. They also visited the Palace Square in Valetta, where FDR was shown the stone replica of the scroll that he presented to the people of Malta on his previous visit, 12/8/43. |
