The destroyers USS Nields and USS Laub joined task group and took station in the screen. These vessels had sailed from Oran, Tunisia on Monday, 1/29, to augment the USS Quincy's screen while it was in the dangerous seas in and about the Straits of Gibraltar.

In a brief ceremony in FDR's cabin, Edward F. Laukagalis, Machinist's Mate first class, USN (from Philadelphia, PA), on behalf of the crew of the USS Quincy, presented FDR a handsome brass hand-engraved ashtray. Details of engraving noted in log. The ashtray was made by Laukagalis from a shell fired by the USS Quincy on D-Day. In the evening, FDR was tendered a birthday dinner party by members of his mess. Gifts received described in log.

Task group changed course to 058. At 2317, changed course to 056. And at 2400, changed speed to 25 knots. During the night, air coverage was furnished the USS Quincy by two Navy "Catalinas" operating from American bases in North Africa.
