USS Houston arrived at Balboa, Panama Canal Zone. Just prior to reaching the channel buoys at 1250, Army bombers and fighters roared overhead in welcome to FDR. Fort Amador fired a national salute as the USS Houston stood up the channel. Mooring was complete at 1415. |

Pres. J. D. Arosemena of Panama came aboard and was received with full honors (except a salute which was despensed with because of Zone regulations). He was followed at short intervals by the following: Sec. of Government and Justice (Panama) Leopoldo Arosemena, Gov. and Mrs. Clarence S. Ridley, Dr. Frank P. Corrigan (American Minister to Panama), Dr. and Mrs. Harmodio Arias (former President of Panama), Rear Adm. and Mrs. Walter N. Vernou (Commandant 15th Naval District, Rear Adm. Yancey Williams (Commander Special Service Squadron), Maj. Gen. and Mrs. David L. Stone (Commanding Gen. Panama Canal Dept.), and Dr. and Mrs. Augusto Boyd (Minister of Panama to the United States). |
