Task group changed course to 308. Very rough seas were now being encountered. Two of the escorting destroyers could not maintain speed and were forced to drop behind. The thermometer dropped rapidly so that by noon it was 18 degrees cooler than at 0800.

Adm. Jonas Ingram (Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet) and Rear Adm. D. M. LeBreton (Commandant 5th Naval District) were on the pier awaiting the arrival and came on board to call on FDR.

FDR left the ship and entrained in his private car, which was parked inside Pier #6.

The remains of Gen. Edwin M. Watson were transferred from the ship to the train. Honors were given by the Marine Guard and Sideboys. The members of FDR's party, serving as honorary pallbearers, and six officers from the USS Quincy as pallbearers, accompanied the remains during the transfer. After the transfer was completed, FDR phoned Washington, DC and spent 30 min talking with people. He used the direct wire that had been installed in the train for his use.
