The train arrived in Fairbanks, AZ and was parked on a siding so as to afford the railroad operating crew an opportunity to charge the train batteries. The comparitively slow headway that we made since leaving Chicago, IL had not allowed for this service while enroute.

Departed Fairbanks, AZ for Tucson, AZ and ultimately San Diego, CA. Stopped in Yuma, AZ for servicing. Here a telephone was rigged to FDR's car and ER talked to Col. James Roosevelt in San Diego, CA. At Yuma, AZ we encountered the hottest weather of the trip - the official temperature was 112 degrees.

Departed Yuma, AZ, after a 30 minute stopover, and proceeded on to San Diego, CA via what was formerly the "San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway" line. This is now a part of the Southern Pacific System. The route we followed dips down into Mexico at several points, so that much of our trip from Yuma, AZ on was along the northwestern fringe of Old Mexico.
