Arrangement: There are two principal series of historical materials comprising the Significant Documents collection. These are the Franklin D. Roosevelt Materials and the Eleanor Roosevelt Materials.

Abstract

This is a selection of historical documents drawn from across the FDR Library's archival collections. Selections include materials identified possessing significant historic, iconic, or research value as individual items independent of their larger archival context. These documents represent major themes and events in the lives of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and are largely drawn from FDR's Papers as President and the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This is an artificial collection of selected archival materials identified as intrinsically significant. Selections were made by Roosevelt Library archivists on the basis of a given document's historical, iconic, or research value as a single item, independent of its larger archival context. Documents date from 1882 through 1962 and represent major themes and events in the lives of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Selections are drawn from across the Library's archival collections and include materials such as personal and official correspondence, speeches, and ephemera. The bulk of materials come from FDR's Papers as President and the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers.

Selections in this series document the major themes and events in the life of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Materials date throughout his lifetime, 1882-1945, with the bulk dating to his time as the 32nd President of the United States, or 1933-1945. Selections reflect his youth, his rise in politics, and his leadership role during both the New Deal era and World War II. Materials include personal and official letters, telegrams, and memos; drafts and reading copies of key speeches including fireside chats; and handwritten notes or "chits" written by FDR giving instructions or directions to his staff and administration officials. Correspondents include Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Mahatmas Gandhi, King George VI, Robert F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin.
